Nanase Tsubasa’s Monologue
This volume opens with Nanase’s second monologue, the first since Volume 3 of the 2nd Year arc.
Since it’s her second time, the details of Nanase’s past are portrayed with much more clarity that you might read in the Trial.
Now then... let’s move on to the main story.
Fitting In
After school at Keyaki Mall. Ayanokoji was spending time with Yoshida and Shimazaki.
Shimazaki, who attends the prep school provided by ANHS, had something he wanted to ask Ayanokoji.
He was curious about what reference books Ayanokoji used and how he studied.
Although Ayanokoji had already completed the high school-level curriculum, making him less than ideal for Shimazaki’s question, he still offered advice by recommending a study guide he once browsed and found suitable for learning.
While this was happening, Yoshida was browsing through some fashion magazines and the topic shifted to the girl he liked... Shiraishi.
The rumour about Shiraishi having “100 man killer” started spreading after the first-year Uninhabited Island Exam, when she grew closer to Nishikawa.
Yoshida heard the rumour from Nishikawa as well. Shimazaki then asked Yoshida:
“Even if the rumour about Shiraishi is true, does it really change how you feel about her?”
Shimazaki confidently said the rumours were false, as he had been watching Shiraishi closely ever since they enrolled.
Yoshida also picked up on the reason Shimazaki had been watching her so attentively.
Ayanokoji concluded that both Shimazaki and Yoshida harbored feelings for Shiraishi... feelings different from those they held for other girls.
One thing that bothered Ayanokoji was that he had never heard this “100 man killer” rumour back when he was still in another class.
He speculated that Nishikawa spread the rumour vaguely because she herself had special feelings for Shiraishi.
And just like Nishikawa, Shiraishi also seemed to be interested in girls, which might explain why she wasn’t particularly upset by the rumour.
NOTE: This part is purely speculation and interpretation on Ayanokoji’s part. This isn’t really related to the story but Ayanokoji and Shimazaki’s speaking styles are so similar that it was hard to tell them apart.
After parting ways with Shimazaki, Ayanokoji was alone with Yoshida. Yoshida was shaken by Ayanokoji’s speculation about Shiraishi but he regained his composure thanks to Ayanokoji’s encouragement.
Realizing that both Yoshida and Shimazaki had feelings for Shiraishi, Ayanokoji asked Yoshida what made her so popular.
Apparently, it was Shiraishi’s mysterious charm that attracted Yoshida. Ayanokoji also felt there was something elusive about her thinking and agreed.
Then Ayanokoji asked...
“Wouldn’t Morishita be even more mysterious?”
To which Yoshida responded:
Shiraishi → Mysterious
Morishita → An incomprehensible weirdo (LMAO)
Ayanokoji reflected that he shouldn’t have lumped Shiraishi and Morishita together.
Yoshida’s emotional highs and lows seemed to be driven by his feelings of love.
Having dated Karuizawa to understand romantic feelings and having broken up without truly grasping them. Ayanokoji, watching Yoshida be so emotionally affected by Shiraishi, wondered if he would ever feel romantic emotions like that himself. (😼)
After finishing his observations of Shimazaki and Yoshida, Ayanokoji returned to the dorm.
A Calm Exam
It was Thursday, already past the middle of May. Their homeroom teacher, Majima, brought up a special exam.
“Starting tomorrow, a new exam will begin.”
“The rewards are as follows: the 1st place class gains +50 points, 2nd place gains +20 points, 3rd place has no change and 4th place loses -25 points. Class points will change accordingly. In the case of a tie, details on how rewards will be handled will also be announced in one week. Until then, act like proper students. And this time, no questions will be allowed.”
What was known at this point was the point change from 1st to 4th place and that the details would be revealed in a week. Everything else about the mysterious special exam was unclear.
In class, the students’ opinions were divided:
“So the rewards were revealed... and the exam starts a week from now?”
“I think the exam period starts tomorrow and lasts for a week.”
“Since the details will be announced in a week, isn’t this week just a preparation period?”
Some believed the special exam would start tomorrow, while others believed it would start after a week.
"Starts tomorrow" group: 12 people
"Starts in a week" group: 19 people
Each student clearly wanted to win and they exchanged opinions accordingly. Depending on whether they prepared for tomorrow or for a week later, their strategies would change significantly.
Shimazaki asked Ayanokoji for leadership direction. The answer he gave was: “behaviour in daily life.”
Since the content of the exam was unknown, he couldn't make any definitive calls. However, given Majima’s words about “acting like proper students” Ayanokoji speculated that daily conduct might be one of the criteria.
Even if the class was split into two views on how to approach the exam, Ayanokoji offered a suggestion that wouldn’t interfere with either side and could be practiced equally by everyone.
During lunch on the same day the special exam was announced without rules, Ayanokoji was invited by Shiraishi to eat together.
Yoshida, who had feelings for Shiraishi, also joined Ayanokoji. Shiraishi called out to Nishikawa and also invited Morishita but Morishita declined.
Then Ayanokoji said:
“Wait. There’s someone else I want to invite... is that okay?”
The person he invited was Kito
. Shiraishi welcomed him with a smile. Yoshida was confused, while Nishikawa happily agreed.
The five of them headed to the cafeteria. The topic soon turned to Ayanokoji’s OAA stats:
Academic Ability: A+ (96)
Physical Ability: A– (81)
Thinking/Adaptability: B (66)
Cooperativeness: B+ (80)
Overall Ability: B+ (80)
With no signs of slacking in either academics or physical ability, Ayanokoji’s OAA was among the top in the grade.
Yoshida and Shiraishi praised his scores but Nishikawa remained wary.
Having come from an upper-tier class to a lower-tier one, Nishikawa still didn’t fully trust Ayanokoji.
Just as things were getting tense and a quarrel nearly broke out between Yoshida and Nishikawa, Shiraishi stepped in and suggested they all talk more about their weekend plans and learn more about each other.
Kito hardly joined the conversation and eventually returned to the classroom ahead of the others.
While finishing his meal, Ayanokoji began thinking about whether it was time to head to the library to see Hiyori.
NOTE: Nishikawa seems carefree on the surface but she’s surprisingly thoughtful.
Knowing the Opponent
The scene shifts to the Horikita Class, where the unexplained special exam was also announced.
Chabashira gave no real explanation and quickly ended the meeting. The loss of Ayanokoji seemed to have taken a toll on her as well... it was subtly showing in her behaviour.
Even without knowing the rules, Horikita believed that by putting their heads together, they could get closer to understanding the exam.
She tried to initiate a discussion but the classmates... who had felt Chabashira's cold attitude... wouldn’t cooperate and time just slipped away.
Determined, Horikita decided to use after-school time to hold a meeting. During breaks and lunch, she approached the students who had expressed dissatisfaction with Chabashira.
When the meeting began after school, Koenji, completely uninterested, left the classroom on his own.
Horikita chased after him, asking him to stay for the sake of uniting the class.
Horikita insisted they were in A-Class now because of their unity so far but Koenji brushed her off, saying it was only because Ayanokoji had been working behind the scenes.
“If you’re really saying that from the heart, then that’s a laughable claim. All this talk about unity and acting as one... isn’t that just you trying to convince yourself that you can win without Ayanokoji Boy?”
Koenji plainly told her she was lacking in ability. Horikita tried to push further...
“Horikita Girl... are you planning to make me your enemy as well?”
Faced with Koenji’s warning, Horikita had no choice but to back down. Right now, she didn’t even have the power to stop him from walking away.
While the class meeting remained unproductive, Horikita left things to Hirata and others and rushed off to the student council room to handle her duties.
Nanase was already there.
This time’s issue involved first-year A-Class’s Kusanagi Minato and D-Class’s Maki Yuma, who had gotten into a physical fight. Horikita was to issue a ruling on the matter.
Coincidentally, similar incidents had occurred in past years... Hosen and Utomiya last year and Ryuen and Sudo the year before. Now that Horikita was student council president, the matter fell to her.
First-years toddlers Kusanagi and Maki arrived. Each blamed the other, both childishly arguing about who was stronger.
Since neither was willing to apologize or reconcile, Horikita was about to judge the situation 60–40 in favour of Kusanagi due to injury severity when Kusanagi muttered something strange:
“I didn’t even hit Maki this badly... damn it.”
This odd statement caught both Horikita and Nanase’s attention.
Believing there might be another party involved in the incident, Horikita decided to investigate further.
Afterward, Horikita headed to Keyaki Mall for a planned meetup... with Karuizawa.
While shopping at the supermarket, they discussed their thoughts on the special exam.
Karuizawa brought up the possibility that Ayanokoji and Ichinose might be working together again. If the two lower-ranked classes were cooperating, then it would be critical to uncover the exam’s rules as soon as possible.
That night, Horikita invited Ibuki and Kushida to her room to discuss Ayanokoji.
This is rough summary of their conversation:
Horikita: “How can we defeat Ayanokoji, now that he’s our enemy?”
Ibuki: “Defeating Ayanokoji physically? Not happening. Seriously, why’s that guy so strong?”
Kushida: “If he’s that athletic, shouldn’t there be some record from middle school? …I searched but no ‘Ayanokoji’ came up.”
Kushida: “Are there any students here from the same middle school as him?”
Ibuki: “Come to think of it, didn’t Yagami seem to know something about him?”
Horikita: “When Yagami disappeared, Amasawa was with him. She mentioned they had a shared connection.”
Ibuki: “So Yagami, Amasawa and Ayanokoji went to the same middle school? Or maybe they’ve known each other since before that?”
Kushida: “I searched for Yagami and Amasawa but nothing came up…”
Horikita: “Wait, wasn’t Yagami from the same middle school as me and Kushida? I don’t know him personally but Kushida, you do, right?”
Ibuki: “Then that can’t be it.”
Kushida: “Me and Yagami? We weren’t from the same school.”
HoriBuki: “What??”
With Kushida’s confession, Horikita realized that Ayanokoji and Yagami had likely spent their early years in the same environment... either the same middle school or even earlier.
And there was still another key person... Amasawa. Horikita decided she needed to talk to her.
NOTE: Is Horikita finally closing in on Ayanokoji’s secrets!?
After Ibuki and Kushida left, Horikita noticed the mess left where Ibuki had been sitting... spilled miso soup, scraps of food... and reflected on manners and behaviour.
That’s when Chabashira’s words came back to her:
I want you to show me you’ve changed since the day you enrolled.
Horikita came to a conclusion.
She went straight to Sudo’s room, where she found him studying(😏) with Onodera.
Horikita shared her thoughts about the special exam with them.
Chabashira’s cold attitude reminded her of when they first enrolled. She suspected this exam might be similar to the one where they had lost all their class points... based on daily behaviour.
And there was a major problem: Koenji, whose behaviour in both class and private life was far from ideal.
Before going to confront Koenji, she had come to Sudo to ask him to accompany her.
When they arrived at Koenji’s room, he welcomed them in.
Horikita shared her theory and surprisingly, Koenji had reached the same conclusion... it was a special exam based on behaviour.
Through negotiation, including offering a large number of private points, Horikita managed to reach an agreement with Koenji.
As they left his room, Sudo told Horikita:
“I’m not as strong or as smart as that guy... but I’ll always be on your side, Suzune. So if you’re in trouble, come to me, just like today.”
He knew he couldn’t replace Ayanokoji but still... he’d support her.
Hearing that, Horikita realized... she had allies.
Classmates she could rely on.
She couldn’t afford to stay stuck in despair over Ayanokoji leaving. With renewed resolve, she moved forward.
NOTE: This Horikita chapter was a full-length one, so it was pretty goddamn long.
The Pursuit of Knowledge
The morning after the special exam was announced. The perspective returns to Ayanokoji.
He runs into Hiyori in the dorm elevator. Since transferring to Class C, he still hasn’t had a proper conversation with her.
They head to school together in silence but then Hashimoto, Morishita and Shiraishi appear.
Hiyori greets the three of them, then quietly continues walking ahead on her own.
Morishita: “You’re even going after Hiyori now? You’ve got no restraint.”
Shiraishi: “So you’ve set your eyes on Hiyori too? You’ve got good taste.”
As Shiraishi’s eyes sparkled, Ayanokoji recalled the conversation he had earlier with Shimazaki and Yoshida.
Then, two students... Kondo and Komiya, believed to be acting under Ryuen’s orders, appeared before the group.
They silently hovered near Ayanokoji and the others, sticking close all the way into the school and up until they parted in the classroom, never saying a word but applying constant pressure.
After school, Ayanokoji headed to Keyaki Mall with Hashimoto to discuss the exam. For some reason, Morishita tagged along.
When they arrived at a café in the mall, Shiraishi was standing at the entrance and ended up joining them as well.
Then Shiraishi asked about the special exam:
“May I ask you a question? You believe the exam is based on daily behavior, correct? What percentage would you assign to that assumption?”
Ayanokoji replied: over 90%. Shiraishi asked why.
He explained that similar remarks had come from teachers in other classes:
Majima: “Act like proper students.”
Hoshinomiya: “You’ll be fine just being your usual selves.”
Chabashira: “I want to believe you’re different from when you first enrolled.”
These lines, though vague individually, collectively pointed toward the nature of the exam. The full picture began to come into focus.
By the time they left Keyaki Mall, it was past 5 PM.
After parting with Hashimoto and Morishita, Ayanokoji made his way to the library to meet Hiyori.
On the way there, he asked Shiraishi, who had remained with him:
“This might sound self-centered but... were you already watching me to some extent even before I transferred classes?”
Shiraishi stopped and replied:
“I’m Shiraishi Asuka.”
And then she held out her hand (adorable).
NOTE: That line randomly gave me “I’m Relena Darlian. And you are...?” vibes, lol.
Even for Ayanokoji, Shiraishi Asuka remains a complete mystery. Who exactly is she...?
Afterward, he arrived at the library... but Hiyori wasn’t there...
NOTE: No Hiyori detected… Sadge.
Yamamura’s Courage
Monday.
The fourth day since the special exam was announced, following the weekend.
Ayanokoji is called out by Morishita. Apparently, Yamamura wanted to meet him but found it difficult to approach directly, so she asked Morishita to act as a go-between.
After several hilarious exchanges with Morishita, Ayanokoji finally gets to meet Yamamura.
Since his transfer, Ayanokoji had refrained from speaking to Yamamura, not because of disinterest but out of consideration... he didn’t want to draw attention to her by interacting too openly.
Yamamura appreciated his thoughtfulness. However, she had a strong desire to be useful to Ayanokoji, so she asked Morishita to call him out and conveyed her feelings directly.
In response, Ayanokoji asked Yamamura to investigate Shiraishi.
While he’d been trying to understand his classmates better, Shiraishi remained elusive... like pushing against a curtain that wouldn’t move. Getting nowhere, he decided to ask Yamamura for help.
Just then, Hashimoto appeared. He had seen Ayanokoji and Morishita leaving together and had been looking for them.
When Hashimoto arrived, Yamamura slipped away unnoticed and Morishita also took her leave.
After a brief exchange with Hashimoto, Ayanokoji started walking toward the library... hoping to see Hiyori, whom he hadn’t been able to meet the other day.
On the way there, Ayanokoji asked himself:
Why am I so focused... on Hiyori alone?
NOTE: Ohh my, I wonder why...
To find that answer, he pressed on toward the library.
Just as he renewed his resolve, he unexpectedly ran into Haruka.
Haruka had been avoiding Ayanokoji up until now but his transfer had created enough distance between them that she could finally speak to him.
She had wanted to share something with him... how hard Airi had been working.
Hasebe showed him her phone, displaying Sakura’s appearance on TV. Not even a year had passed since Sakura’s expulsion and yet, she had already made it to the screen.
The two watched her together. Their brief chat ended up lasting longer than expected and by the time the sky outside began to take on a reddish hue, Ayanokoji parted with Hasebe and headed for the library.
But once again... Hiyori was no longer there.
NOTE: After reading spoilers, I just can't wait to see her already.
The scene shifts.
Members of Ryuen’s class are gathered at karaoke and Hiyori is among them.
Ryuen already knows that Hiyori harbors special feelings for Ayanokoji and he plans to use that to his advantage.
Meanwhile, Hiyori herself was beginning to steel her resolve.
To Ayanokoji, she might be just a friend... or maybe even less than that.
And if that’s all she is to him, then no matter how faint her feelings are, they’d only become a heavy burden.
Fortune and Misfortune Are Intertwined
On the fifth day after the special exam announcement... after school.
A message arrives from Ichinose:
“Hoshinomiya-sensei seems like she wants to meet with you.”
Though allied with Ayanokoji’s class, Hoshinomiya asks him to let her class win, since they currently have fewer class points.
She tries various tactics to twist the situation in her favour but Ayanokoji makes it clear: He has no intention of interfering with the outcome this time. He also tells her that even Chabashira was capable of watching over her class without getting involved.
Hearing this, Hoshinomiya backs off quietly.
Then, Ayanokoji heads for the library.
Only 30 minutes had passed since the end of class... it was just the right time. He steps into the library to see Hiyori, who should be there...
And finally!!! Ayanokoji is able to meet Hiyori again.

Cliffhanger!!! Haha
Okay... I’ve covered all the main plot points here and left the side dishes for you to enjoy when you read the volume yourself.
Anyhow...
This volume was mainly focused on human relationships and behind-the-scenes actions. Even though the special exam was barely there, it was still quite fun to read.
The previous volume, being the start of the Year 3, felt more like an introductory chapter. Compared to the storm of developments we’ve seen before, it had a more laid-back atmosphere.
But this volume... it really go deep into the story.
The special exam this time felt more like an extra. The real highlight was the deepening of mysteries rather than any resolution.
I’ll list a few things that stood out to me in this volume.
First is Nanase, who became the first internal monologue perspective in the Year 3. She’s had a lot of suspicious moments in the past and I had guessed she might be someone sent by Onijima’s side. Her monologue this time makes me want to dig even deeper into her character.
Then there’s Shiraishi, who somehow always speaks with her back like a pro. She’s full of mystery. She calls herself an “observer” and said she was given that role.
She was tasked with watching Ayanokoji from a distance, all while leading a perfectly normal high school life. But that raises the question... who the hell gave her that order??? It’s not something that could happen unless the person already knew Ayanokoji would be enrolling.
At first, I thought it might be related to the White Room and that someone was monitoring Ayanokoji’s behaviour as part of some research and all blah blah blah... But now it seems more likely that the person who gave the instructions was Shirogane-sensei and that he’s also the one who connected her with Nanase.
Judging from her conversation with Nanase, they seem to be part of the same group... but their command structures might be different. Also, I’m really curious about that “schoolmate” of Shiraishi’s that Nanase mentioned.
And speaking of things that caught my attention... there’s Ishigami, who showed up in front of Horikita, shared info and walks away like a G. She said meeting him was a turning point in past tense at the end of the volume…
Also, one mysterious part is that someone seems to have orchestrated the meeting between Horikita and Ishigami.
A planned encounter.
This part feels a bit difficult to mention so read the actual scene and entertain yourselves.
Also, Ayanokoji... who has finally began to realize that the emotion growing inside him might actually be love or maybe not.
It's funny the way he talks about even his own feelings as if they’re an interesting research subject... so typically Ayanokoji.
At the same time, Ichinose’s line:
“Who are you thinking about?”
Sents chills down my spine.
Ichinose-san’s been acting almost like a Newtype lately. She seems to be slowly climbing the stairs which she’s absolutely not supposed to.
Hiyori, who was narratively NPC is now she’s broken into the lead at the fourth corner. Hiyori Fandom are probably rejoicing right now but the final stretch is long.
Also, there seems to be a first-year student to watch out for.
She’s apparently behind the fight between two other first-years that was brought to the student council. We still don’t know how the new first-years will tie into the main story, so while my interest is piqued, it’s not fully there yet.
Some parts were quite a bit difficult understand so I guess I will reread when I got time.
Anyways... I'm Nemesys.
And thank you for reading all the way through. See you in the next volume!
PROLOGUE
Nanase Tsubasa’s Monologue
“Why did things end up like this...?”
I murmured quietly beside him, as he lay unconscious in his hospital bed.
“They diagnosed him with a prolonged disorder of consciousness, didn’t they?”
A man spoke in a flat, emotionless voice, stating the facts without expression.
Then, gently touched the name tag on the bed that read “Eiichiro Matsuo.”
A prolonged disorder of consciousness... more simply put, a vegetative state.
His eyes might open, and he may breathe on his own, but there’s no awareness, no response to the world around him.
The doctor said that if it’s within a few weeks or months since the onset, there might still be a chance he could wake up.
But... that hope is fading.
“Eiichiro was said to be a very kind person, wasn’t he?”
“...Yes... If only... if only I had noticed something was wrong with him... this never would’ve happened. I would’ve never let this happen…”
Frustration and sorrow overwhelmed me and tears began to flow endlessly.
“This world can’t be lived in with kindness alone. No... in fact, such kindness only gets devoured by monsters far beyond saving.”
The man said this as he turned to me with a faint smile.
“This world runs on give and take. You understand that, right?”
“Yes. I’m grateful for all the support you've given.”
After being turned away from hospital to hospital, he was the one who found a place to admit Eiichiro-kun. If we had been even 30 minutes later, he might not have made it.
“What exactly do you want me to do?”
“I’ve brought you an opportunity. A chance to get your revenge.”
“...A chance?”
“Yes. I’ll teach you how to get close to the person you should take revenge on.”
As he spoke, the man placed a school admission form and a photo on the small table beside me.
“This is...?”
“Getting into ANHS is the only way to get close to him.”
“...I didn’t ask before... but who are you?”
“My apologies. I’m Tsukishiro. I’ve known both you and Eiichiro since you were little.”
“I’ve seen plenty of adults who pretend to know things just to get close.”
“Is Shirakane doing well?”
At the mention of that name, my body reacted before my mind could. I tried to stay calm, but I couldn’t hide the reflex.
He really does know us from back then.
“You know Shirakane-sensei?”
“I owe him quite a bit from when I was younger.”
He looked about the same age as Shirakane-sensei.
That meant the "debt" he mentioned probably wasn’t anything like ours... it was from a different world entirely.
“You’re not evil. But the world I live in is full of it. People pretending to be good while hiding their true nature... or just pure evil itself. But you’re different, Nanase Tsubasa. Ordinary, yes, but capable. Ordinary, yet still inexperienced. Ordinary, but talented. People like you... sometimes they’re the ones who can defeat evil. That’s what I believe.”
“You said your name was Tsukishiro. Is this boy in the photo connected to that evil?”
The photo showed a boy around my age.
“His name is Kiyotaka Ayanokoji. He holds a key to the person you must take revenge on. He’s already enrolled at ANHS and blends in with the regular students.”
“So you want me to approach him?”
“Yes. I’ll give you instructions as needed. It’s all for the sake of revenge. Stay adaptable. But be careful... this boy is calm, sharp, and extremely perceptive. If you approach him carelessly, he’ll easily see through you.”
“Then... what should I do?”
“Mix lies with truth. It’s true that you cared for Eiichiro and that you want to honor him. That feeling... make it the base for a new version of yourself. Make it so that your real intent is never fully exposed. He may grow suspicious of you, but he won’t probe deeply. He’ll simply label you as insignificant and move on.”
“Let me ask you one last thing. Why me?”
“Because you’re in the perfect position. You’re not clearly on one side or the other. That uncertainty makes you ideal for the role I need.”
“And what if I end up siding with Ayanokoji?”
“Well... we'll think about that when the time comes."
“So... Can you do it?”
He asked and without hesitation, I nodded.
Even now, I sometimes recall that moment like a dream.
At the time, my heart was completely set on revenge. I wanted to drag out Atsuomi Ayanokoji... the one who drove Eiichiro-kun to this state.
But now... something’s changed.
I want to save Ayanokoji-senpai.
That’s how I truly feel now.
Because if he graduates from ANHS like this, he’ll fall completely into the path of pure evil.
And then more victims like Eiichiro-kun will follow... victims created by his own hands.
I can’t let that happen.
Which means...
It’s up to me, who knows about danger, to stop it.
Even today, I keep searching for that small key... deep in the forest, where the answers lie hidden.
Fitting In
It was Sunday morning.
Looking out the window, I saw it was raining nonstop today.
It wasn’t pouring heavily, but still just unpleasant enough to make going out with an umbrella feel like a hassle.
By the time it was almost 10 AM, I had changed clothes, grabbed an umbrella, and headed down to the dorm lobby without much delay.
As I stepped into the elevator, I noticed the floor was wet... evidence that students had already been going in and out since early morning.
“Yo, morning.”
As soon as I reached the first floor and the elevator doors opened, a classmate of mine, Yoshida, standing near the entrance in a hoodie, turned and casually greeted me with a wave.
“Morning.”
After exchanging brief greetings, Yoshida glanced over toward the sofas.
“Shimazaki also came down a little while ago.”
Apparently hearing his name, Shimazaki stood up and took one of his white wireless earbuds out of his right ear.
He tucked it into a small case... probably the one made for wireless earbuds... that he pulled out from his bag.
“What were you listening to?”
I walked over to him alongside Yoshida and asked.
“English listening practice. For exams. I’m not that great at English, so I want to put in extra time while I still can.”
He probably didn’t want to waste even a moment waiting around for classmates.
“Huh? I thought you weren’t bad at English? Don’t you get higher scores than me?”
Yoshida looked up at the ceiling, trying to recall past test results.
“Comparing with you doesn’t mean much. It’s my weakest subject, no doubt.”
“Alright, alright. Sorry for comparing myself.”
Yoshida pouted a bit but apologized anyway.
Shimazaki was consistently among the top students, but it was clear he got there by recognizing his weaknesses and preparing thoroughly.
As a third-year student with exams approaching, it made sense... he had the discipline of someone who used to be in Class A.
“I thought you’d take that as sarcasm, but you’re not mad, huh?”
Yoshida had a bit of a short temper, but surprisingly didn’t snap at Shimazaki’s blunt reply.
“Of course I got a little annoyed, but this guy’s always studying. As for me, I’m not that serious about school and the difference between us shows.”
Maybe it was just that the two of them got along well.
“You sure you’re not literally studying all the time these days?”
“Not really. I just make sure to put in at least five hours a day.”
That didn’t even include school hours.
I’m not sure how much the average third-year studies outside of class, but five hours a day definitely isn’t short.
Yoshida threw up his hands in an exaggerated "no way" gesture.
“The Class A graduation privilege is only a fallback. To get into a decent university, this much is just standard. It’s not just me. I’m going to the prep school in Keyaki Mall again this evening.”
“Seriously? How much studying do you need?”
Oh yeah... there’s a cram school inside the mall run by ANHS. I’ve never been, not even once.
I heard you can attend for free as long as your behaviour is good and you’ve got a clear plan for college... even if you don’t have private points.
“So... how many students actually go to that cram school?”
I asked, just out of curiosity. But Shimazaki gave me a bit of a glare.
“You don’t know? Among third-years alone, there are already about twenty. That’s still low compared to regular schools. The number will probably go up as summer gets closer.”
That’s how serious people were getting about exams now.
“Your grades aren’t bad either. Maybe you should at least check it out?”
Yoshida might not be at Shimazaki’s level, but he’s still smart. If he’s thinking about college, going wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Shimazaki probably suggested it out of concern, but Yoshida immediately shook his head.
“No way, man. I’m not aiming super high. Just a decent school is enough. I’m not going to spend my weekends buried in books. I need time to hang out with friends or I’ll go nuts.”
He declined, glancing at Shimazaki’s serious face.
“Fair enough. I’m not forcing you. That’s why I’ll study wherever and however I want, as long as I’m not bothering anyone.”
Shimazaki seemed a bit irritated, like Yoshida had dismissed his efforts.
“Y-yeah, I get it. Of course, it’s your choice. No need to glare like that.”
Yoshida quickly raised both hands in mock surrender.
“A-anyway... why’d you call me and Ayanokoji out here on our day off?”
Clearing his throat, Yoshida shifted the topic and asked Shimazaki directly.
It was our precious day off. For Shimazaki, that usually meant focused self-study. So why did he call us?
“The truth is, I only needed to talk to Ayanokoji. But we’re not really close enough to hang out one-on-one or talk directly. I figured it’d go smoother with you around.”
So Yoshida wasn’t actually involved in the matter at all. The word “talk” made the goal a bit clearer
“Oh, I see. Well, I do get relied on a lot.”
Yoshida said with a grin, looking slightly proud.
“Anyway, since you asked, I’ll help however I can. Ayanokoji... make sure you hear him out.”
Yoshida patted me on the shoulder, pushing the task toward me.
“That depends on what the ‘talk’ is about. What do you want to discuss?”
As Shimazaki said, we didn’t exactly have a close relationship. There had to be a specific reason to ask me out in this weather.
Also, he had asked me to bring an umbrella. If it was just to talk, we could’ve done that in someone’s room. No need to meet outside on a rainy day.
Shimazaki glanced around casually, then looked straight into my eyes.
“Today, I plan to make you spill all your secrets.”
“...Secrets?”
“This isn’t something we can settle here. Just come with me and you’ll understand.”
With that, Shimazaki opened his umbrella and walked out of the lobby with a fast pace.
“What the heck? Where’s he headed?”
“Dunno. He mentioned Keyaki Mall, though...”
Yoshida and I exchanged a glance before we followed after him.
1.1
Shimazaki, walking ahead of us, headed straight for Keyaki Mall.
When we arrived, he slipped his umbrella into one of the plastic covers by the entrance and pulled it through, sheathing it neatly. We copied him and followed inside. Without stopping, he walked directly to the bookstore.
Only then did he finally turn around.
“The bookstore? Taking a detour?”
Yoshida muttered.
Shimazaki didn’t respond. Instead, he walked in and made a beeline for the academic section... the shelves packed with study guides and reference books.
“This is where I wanted to bring you, Ayanokoji.”
So it wasn’t a detour at all. This place was his intended destination.
“I want you to show me what reference books you use and how you study.”
With that, the reason for today’s meeting finally came into focus.
“I see… so that’s what this is about.”
“I looked at the results from the last special exam. I get it... you’re on a whole different level from me. I’m not expecting to catch up overnight. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop trying.”
Back when we talked about cram school, he gave me a bit of a glare... probably an unconscious sign of rivalry.
He wanted to improve, to study more effectively, and to close the gap between us... even a little. That much was obvious.
“C’mon, Ayanokoji, just teach him.”
Yoshida urged, stepping in as the middleman.
But I didn’t respond.
Or rather... I couldn’t.
I wanted to help.
I truly did.
But I didn’t have an answer I could give him.
While most high school students are still actively learning new things, I had completed that process in early childhood. The studying I do now is more like review than learning. That’s why I can’t give him the kind of answer he’s hoping for.
“Hey, Aya---”
“It’s fine, Yoshida.”
Shimazaki interrupted, his brow furrowed slightly.
“I get it. He’s not exactly eager to give away his methods.”
“It’s your own unique study approach. I don’t expect you to hand it over for free. If needed, I’ll pay in private points. Or, if there’s something else you want...”
I cut him off before he could go further.
“If your question today had been something I could solve, I would’ve helped without hesitation.”
“Would’ve, huh… So, when it comes to studying, it’s basically a trade secret? Or are you just asking for a bigger reward?”
“No, I don’t need anything in return. Honestly, if your grades improve, that benefits the whole class... it lifts everyone up. That alone is enough of a return. And it’s not like I’d be troubled if you caught up academically.”
I tried to explain as clearly as I could, but I knew it wouldn’t be easy to make him understand.
“I get what you’re saying... sort of. But still… You really don’t look like you want to teach me. Is it because you’re afraid I might actually catch up?”
“Not at all. If you think I’m just trying to protect my image, you’re off the base. I don’t care about being number one or looking like I am.”
There are definitely students in this school who surpass me in different areas. I want that to be true. It needs to be true.
Even in academics, if someone surpasses me, I want to see it happen.
“In that case, at least tell me what reference books you use. And how you manage your study time and schedule... down to the details.”
He asked directly, determined to analyze everything about me, without hesitation.
“And don’t worry. Even if your methods don’t work for me, I won’t blame you. I’ll just assume they didn’t suit me and move on.”
His sincerity about studying was real. And Yoshida stepped in beside him, following his lead.
“Hey, me too. If it helps me study more efficiently, I’m all in.”
What to do?
The kind of basic advice I gave Karuizawa... simple tips for a typical student... wasn’t likely to help guys like Shimazaki or Yoshida. But at the same time, I obviously couldn’t apply the intensive, specialized methods I was developing to train someone to compete with WhiteRoom students.
Knowing I’d probably raise suspicion, I decided to reveal a small part of the truth.
“To be honest… I don’t really use reference books like these anymore.”
“What? But you don’t go to cram school either. And you’ve been solving questions from topics we haven’t even covered yet. How do you explain that?”
“Honestly... A lot of it’s just coincidence. I get most of my info online these days. There are videos that explain hard problems, right? I happened to come across some that covered similar material, so I already knew how to solve it.”
“I mean, I guess that could happen sometimes, but…”
Shimazaki was sharp... precisely because he was capable. He didn’t seem fully convinced, and his doubts showed. Still, I emphasized that I didn’t rely on any specific site or channel.
In the end, it would probably come across as secrecy. But I couldn’t avoid that.
“That said… there was one reference book I found genuinely helpful.”
I often stop by bookstores. I’ve skimmed through a number of study guides out of curiosity, and based on that, I had a sense of which ones seemed most effective. That much, I could share.
“If you’re okay with that kind of advice, I’d be happy to give it.”
Even if I couldn’t share everything, I still wanted to offer something useful. It was important to make that intention clear.
Now it was up to Shimazaki.
Whether he’d accept me as a guy hiding something unpleasant... or as someone he didn’t fully understand but could still learn from.
Without much hesitation, Shimazaki nodded.
“Alright. I’ll take your advice... no need to hold back.”
To improve himself, he chose to trust... at least for now.
So, I recommended the reference book I thought was most effective.
Both of them reached for it immediately.
But Yoshida quickly gave up on buying it.
Naturally, study guides vary a lot depending on your target school or field of study.
What suited Shimazaki, who was aiming high, didn’t match Yoshida’s goals.
After that, Shimazaki and I helped Yoshida figure out what would work for him.
We spent about 30 minutes wandering the study section, pulling books off the shelves, flipping through them, putting them back, talking things over. It might’ve seemed inefficient, but it wasn’t a bad use of time... in fact, it was kind of enjoyable.

Gradually, we honed in on Yoshida’s preferences and settled on a good pick.
It was small, but the sense of teamwork and accomplishment was real.
After that, the three of us split up briefly to browse for other books, then met back up in the store. I saw a few magazines and novels I liked, but I was short on private points, so I held back.
“What’s with all those books?”
Shimazaki asked, eyeing the stack Yoshida returned with... stuff that wasn’t related to the study guides we recommended.
“Oh, these?”
Yoshida grinned.
“Hey, it’s not like I can’t buy other stuff, right?”
He had fashion magazines for guys, manga, and books on style and conversation skills... mostly stuff about how to dress and act to attract girls.
“Yeah, studying’s important. But romance matters too, you know? We’ve got less than a year of high school left. I’m not wasting my last chance to date a high school girl.”
Heading toward the checkout, Yoshida said it like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“It’s not necessarily your last chance…”
Shimazaki replied, slightly put off.
And he wasn’t wrong.
Even after becoming a college student or joining the workforce, it’s not like your chances of dating a high schooler drop to zero.
…Though, the bigger the age gap gets, the more other problems tend to arise.
That’s what I was thinking about... more seriously than I expected.
But the real reason behind Yoshida’s behavior had to be something else entirely.
“Is it because you won’t get to see Shiraishi anymore?”
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Yoshida’s motivation came with a time limit: Until graduation from Advanced Nurturing High School.
I was just casually trying to confirm a hunch... but the moment I said her name, Yoshida visibly panicked and dropped one of the books he was holding.
“Hey! Ayanokoji, don’t say unnecessary stuff like that!”
He practically lunged at me to shut me up, but the words were already out. No taking them back.
“I was just genuinely curious. Was it that bad to ask?”
“Of course it was! I... I don’t even like Shiraishi, alright!? I told you that before too, didn’t I?!”
Sure, Yoshida himself kept denying it… but everything about his behavior said otherwise. And Shiraishi definitely knew how he felt.
It’s not an exaggeration to say he likes her 99%... no, maybe 100%.
“…Shiraishi? You… like Shiraishi?”
Shimazaki, walking a few steps ahead, turned around at the commotion. He looked over at Yoshida, who was hastily picking up his fallen book, and muttered.
Recognized as the leader, Ayanokoji begins to deepen his interactions with classmates from Class C, such as Shimazaki, Yoshida, Shiraishi, and Nishikawa, whom he hadn’t been involved with before.
Amidst this, a mysterious new exam is announced. The only information given is:
“A new exam will begin tomorrow.”
“Details will be revealed in a week.”
Class C demonstrates their capabilities by immediately discussing the various possibilities and how to prepare.
Meanwhile, Horikita and the others in Class A are unable to come together, as the damage they’ve suffered since spring continues to build up, leading them to take out their frustrations on Chabashira.
Even so, Horikita begins to show signs of growth, as she consults not only with Karuizawa but also Kushida and Ibuki about problems in the class and the student council, rather than trying to handle everything alone.
The series is going strong! The second volume of the third-year arc, where the student's feelings collide!
“Today, I’m going to make you confess all your secrets, down to the last one.”

Kushida: “I searched for Yagami and Amasawa but nothing came up… ”
Horikita: “Wait, wasn’t Yagami from the same middle school as me and Kushida?

“Why did things end up like this...? ”

Merci pour votre travail acharne .Au fait les spoilers selon lesquelles ayanokoji a simule ses sentiments et actes avec hiyori pour faire perdre la classe de ryuen a l'examen special sont elles vraies?
Thank you for the summary. Btw I have a question. Can you please tell me if the "leaks" about Ayanokoji saying he's gonna try expelling Hiyori to weaken Ryuen so he can team up with Horikita is true? I heard he was gonna use Hiyori's feelings and I was very disappointed to hear that. Best girl Hiyori deserves the best ending.
Now my mood for reading COTE novel is coming back again
thank you for this summary as always!
